Climate & Location
Puerto Morelos lies south of Cancun and north of Playa del Carmen on the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. This tranquil beach town is more laid back than its neighbor to the north, allowing you to experience all the natural sights without the party atmosphere. Puerto Morelos has elongated open stretches of white sand beaches dotted with swaying palms. The peaceful fishing village earns its nickname of the Jewel of the Caribbean as Mexico’s best kept secret. Puerto Morelos is the place to get away from it all, relax and watch the sunrise over the clear Caribbean waters. Known as a National Marine Park, development here has been kept to a minimum. Within a few miles are numerous ecological parks and wildlife nature reserves. The most popular park is Xcaret, home to amazing tropical flora and fauna. Escape for a day to explore this archeological park, witness flamingoes, macaws, jaguars, crocodiles and more in their natural environment. Play on the underground rivers, tropical jungle trail or swim with dolphins at Xcaret. On the other hand, check out the Crococun Zoo in Puerto Morelos for an up-close, personal experience with the crocodiles and other native species.

For a bona fide look at the jungle, head to the Extreme Canopy Adventure at Selvatica. This zip line circuit tour offers 12 exciting stations and finishes in a freshwater sinkhole, where you can zip, dive or walk into the water for a refreshing swim.

Activities
Just a few miles north is the Great Mesoamerican Reef, the second largest in the world. Home to over 500 species of coral and fish, these shallow reefs provide a great place to snorkel or scuba dive. Or head to a number of fishing tour operators to take your chances at deep-sea fishing. Take a catamaran out for a sunset cruise along the translucent waters. Try your hand at one of the many golf courses nearby. Championship designs with astounding tropical accents make the Yucatan’s golf courses an enlightening escape.

Historical sites
For a once in a lifetime look at the three centuries old Mayan culture, the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, the Pyramid of Kukulcan and Tulum are well worth the drive out of Puerto Morelos. The impressive Mayan village of Chichen Itza was recently named as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. Approximately a 90-minute drive southwest of Puerto Morelos, Chichen Itza features the Temple of Kukulcan, Temple of the Warriors, and the Great Ball Court, the largest in any ancient Mayan civilization. The walled city of Tulum highlights yet another Mayan village and fort. Situated an hour south on the east coast of the Yucatan, the Tulum village used the sea cliffs to one side, and walls around the rest of the city to defend invaders. Both regions are a stunning and fascinating look at the Mayans, one of the world’s oldest and most sophisticated civilizations.

Dining
Local flavors abound in Puerto Morelos in the area restaurants. The bohemian atmosphere offers everything from dining under the stars on the beach to more upscale fine dining at the area luxury resorts. Many restaurants feature fresh catch of the day seafood from the nearby Caribbean Sea. You will also find vegetarian, traditional authentic Mexican and international specialties.
