Pick Your Perfect Ski Vacation

The majestic mountains in the Rockies should be on top on your list for a fun family getaway or and adventure with some of your best friends this winter. Embrace the fun that comes from taking the family to a mountain resort area where activities abound. Picture your ski or snowboarding family or friends gathered around a cozy fire after an exhilarating day on the mountains.

Choose the right mountain destination:

Some mountain resorts are built around a village and some are built around a town. What’s the difference? A town is a small city with streets where you can drive between the shops and restaurants and you may need to take a shuttle to get around. If you want to be closer to everything, choose a village resort where everything is built around a pedestrian only collection of shops, restaurants and lodging.

When choosing a ski or snowboard resort area, you might be overwhelmed by the where to look for the best fit for your family or friends. Ski destinations from Albuquerque, NM to Alberta and British Columbia offer beginner runs, ski schools as well as Black Diamond and heli-skiing and most offer snowboarding runs and pipes. The altitude of the mountain and base area is especially important to consider for children or beginning skiers. Also, consider the number of level green versus black diamond runs or steepness of the slopes. The ski or snowboarding levels can make it more fun and challenging for the experienced adventurer in your party, but may be too difficult for young children or beginners. It’s important that you consult a knowledgeable travel ski/snowboard advisor to make sure you choose the right fit for everyone in your ski party.

All mountain snow is not alike! Skiing in light fluffy snow is exciting, but there is even a difference in the powder throughout the Rockies.  Northern Colorado and Utah both have very dry, light fluffy snow sometimes called champagne snow.

First consider how many days you want to ski and if the location is close to a mountain airport or is it a long drive from the airport to the mountain resort. There are several options on how to get to the lodging. Renting a vehicle might be ok, but while you’re at the mountain resort you will rarely need a car. Your best choice is enjoying the scenery while riding in a private luxury SUV driven by an experienced driver from the airport to the resort area.

When choosing where to stay, look for lodging convenient to the lifts and gondolas. Can you to ‘ski in’ and ‘ski out’ from your accommodations? How far do you have to walk or do you have to ride a shuttle bus? It’s worth your time to select a full service lodge where you have the convenience of being slopeside.

Next, is there enough room to relax and enjoy being together after a day on the slopes? Do you have kitchen or kitchenette facilities for light meals or snacking? There are many 2 or 3 bedroom units in resort hotels and condos which allow everyone to be together and gather for drinks or lighter meals.

Where do you store your boots and skis or snowboards overnight? Most accommodations do not allow you to take them to your room or condo. Choose wisely and stay where they offer ski ‘butler’ services. A ski butler will keep your skis in a locker overnight and warm your boots before you head out in the morning! Arrangements for boots and ski rentals should be reserved in advance, but the top services will fit your party for skis and boots right in your room. The amenities and services offered can make your winter experience exceptional.

Non-ski Activities:

Ski resorts are all about fun for families, couples, singles or small groups. There is so much more to do in the mountains, than just ski! At some resorts you can take a downhill toboggan ride, slide down the slope on a tube, go on a horse drawn sleigh ride, gather around a bonfire, ride the gondola after dark and have a special dinner on the mountain at the peak in a shelter, snowmobile rides, or take a dip in an outdoor hot springs. At resorts where the Olympics have been held in the past, you can even ride in a bobsled or luge with an experienced driver!

Dining and entertainment options are abundant. Everything from pizza to filet mignon prepared by great cooks or gourmet chefs will be available. For example in Whistler, BC, rated #1 ski resort by Ski Magazine, you’ll find everything from fine dining at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler to an authentic Irish Pub that was brought over from Ireland piece by piece and reassembled in Whistler Village.
