Cruises offer more choices for a Multi-Generational Vacation

Paul Gauguin Cruises multi generational travelWhat better way to vacation with the whole family on a cruise?

At Paul Gauguin Cruises, they know that a cruise is the perfect way to “experience a variety of destinations together as a family.” Seeing multiple destinations and only unpacking once is certainly attractive when it involves a large family dynamic. Newer ships from many cruise lines are featuring more family suites, or connected cabins to accommodate large family groups. Generally, when you reserve 10 or more cabins, the group discount applies. Speak to your travel advisor about how many and the ages of everyone in the family so she can determine if adjoining rooms net you a better deal.

With so many activities on board and off, you won’t feel “stuck” with the extended family for the whole vacation. Many families will plan a few activities together for the duration of the cruise, and plan to regroup nightly around the dinner table. If the children are engaged with supervised youth programs, the adults may be enjoying quiet time alone at an adults-only pool. Or perhaps the kids and grandkids are off on an active shore excursion while the grandparents take in a round of leisurely golf. One day may find the women in the family enjoying the spa while the men try their luck at the casino. One thing is for certain, the whole family will have stories to share around the evening meal where everyone gathers.

Orient Exress River Cruise (2)Depending on where you want to go will help determine which cruise line to choose.  Consider traveling down the river on a river cruise through Europe, the Amazon or even Africa. While these boats are smaller than a large luxury liner, the ever-changing scenery, frequent port destinations will keep everyone engaged. Don’t count the ships out for size, as many River Cruises still have supervised children’s programs as well. Right now Tauck is sailing through France’s Rhone River on a designated family cruise. And while the youngsters are brushing up on their French lessons, the adults can enjoy learning and sampling the wine as you glide through France’s best wine regions.

Of course, the natural world captures a child’s fascination and a cruise such as Silversea’s cruise to the Galapagos Islands will thrill young and old alike. Sail around the islands exploring the exotic animals. Yacht Le Diamant Exterior Penguins1Perhaps a cruise to the end of the world in Argentina is in order to discover penguins just off shore. Sail down the Amazonian rainforest and search the jungle for interesting flora and fauna. There are even cruises that take you on gorilla explorations along the Western African coastline, or through the African savannah. If these once in a lifetime destinations are on your dream travel list, why not share them with your grandchildren?

Including the grandchildren on your cruise doesn’t mean you have to give up luxury, or only travel on Disney Cruise lines. (Although Disney does a great job catering to all ages and should be considered.) Many of the small ship and luxury lines are including more children’s programs that integrate seamlessly with their style of cruising. For example, Compagnie du Ponant, a small-ship luxury yacht cruise focuses on getting up close and personal in ports unreached by larger liners. Discover the art of learning while journeying and have fun at the same time. What better way for children, and adults too, to discover history than by experiencing it as it comes alive in countries such as Greece, Italy and Croatia? Get hands on with mythology, history, language and more. Compagnie du Ponant’s small navigable size brings families within steps of Antarctic penguins, Eastern Russian walruses, or sea turtles in the Caribbean waters.

Crystal Cruises Serenity (22)Never fear about cabin fever either for days at sea. Many lines organize plenty of on board activities for youngsters to keep them busy, and let the adults relax. More than just babysitting, the youth programs aboard the ships feature fun such as scavenger hunts, bridge & galley tours, pizza making, karaoke and mini Olympics and so much more.

And while these cruise ships have plenty to keep the children occupied, there’s no shortage of activities or relaxation for the parents and grandparents. All of these luxury liners, incredible gourmet dining, exceptional and varied itineraries, award winning spas, adults-only pools, exceptional nightly entertainment and shore excursions. For example, Crystal Cruises offer private adventure shore excursions; a perfect way to venture out with everyone in your family group and travel at your own pace.

From Cirque du Soleil to educational wine tastings and from high stakes casinos to high reward golf outings, the entire family will have no shortage of things to do. In fact, many families enjoy the freedom of cruising without too much “togetherness,” they return year after year creating a new family tradition.
